Introduction

We recently completed a transport mission for Bergen and Hordaland Turlag, where we transported 90 kg of provisions to the Hadlaskard tourist hut on foot. We filmed part of the mission and you can find the video on Instagram here:

Background

The Hadlaskard cabin is located at approximately 1000 m above sea level, west of the Hardangervidda plateau, in Veigdalen, an area known for both beautiful mountain scenery and wild reindeer populations. It has been documented that the wild reindeer in this part of the Hardangervidda plateau are now under severe pressure. DNT+1 Therefore, it is extra important that the operation of the cabin offer is combined with nature considerations.

We carried provisions from the parking lot at Hjølmo, and made a total of 2 round trips to get everything in. It was 20 km to walk each way and the heaviest thing we carried was 40kg. We finished in a total of 4 days, and used plenty of time so that we got a trip out of it too.

Nature conservation – why it matters

  • The wild reindeer is a species with national and international responsibility – Norway is one of the few countries that has viable populations in high mountain areas. DNT

  • In the area around Hadlaskard, researchers and the administration have pointed out that traffic, noise and disturbance can force wild reindeer to move from important grazing areas or calving grounds. Statsforvalteren.no

  • By choosing a transport solution that reduces noise/risk of disturbance, you contribute to better living conditions for the wild reindeer – and at the same time we strengthen the operation of the cabin in a responsible manner.

Conclusion

By delivering 90 kg of provisions with a more gentle transport choice, we contributed to both cabin operations and conservation.
